R.I.P. Billy Mays

Billy Mays, the burly, bearded television pitchman whose boisterous hawking of products such as Orange Glo and OxiClean made him a pop-culture icon, has died. He was 50.

Talk about something that just hit me out of the blue yesterday, when that news came across I had to check a couple of times to make sure it really had happened.
I know we've made fun of Billy over the years and his products, but from what I've heard and read from people that knew him, he was a really good fellow that just happened to discover the right gimmick that propelled him to stardom and a place in American iconography.
His passing will put a big dent in the direct response marketing business because he really was the king of sales.
I feel bad for his family and friends because I'm sure his death leaves an even bigger hole in their lives.
I read his Twitter page yesterday and the next to the last entry was his mentioning of a third hip replacement.
I'm wondering if that bumpy landing Saturday didn't jar loose a blood clot.
